Make Your Own Brown Sugar

Have you ever been baking or ready to make a BBQ rub and realized you were out of brown sugar? ♪♪♪ dunt, dunt, dunt ♪♪♪ Fear not! With just two simple ingredients, that you should already have in your home, you can make your own brown sugar. Seriously! I kid you not!! Now put down those car keys and head back to the kitchen and lets whip some up.

Now you only need two little things to make your own brown sugar, and if you bake like me, you have them both already on hand....... plain old white sugar and molasses. Really, that's it........ The secret has been revealed, and the universe didn't end!!

Go grab a mixing bowl and for every 1 cup of white sugar, add 1 tablespoon of molasses and whisk it together till there are no clumps. You have just made light brown sugar! Bask in the glory of your beautiful brown sugar.

But wait, your recipe calls for dark brown sugar? No sweat! Dark brown sugar just calls for more molasses. I bump up the ration to 1 cup of white sugar and 2 tablespoons of molasses. Now isn't that simple! Honestly though, if you want, play with the ratios. While the dark brown sugar may taste stronger off the spoon, it bakes just right.

Now aren't you glad you put those car keys down? So what are you waiting for? Go bake!

  1. Good idea, and I've seen that before but never tried it. It tends to dry out, so it's nice to make it fresh...

  2. Good Morning Mindie, I was fascinated to see how easy it was to make brown sugar.... I had no idea. Dark brown sugar is often a sugar which I forget to replenish for my store cupboard, so now, instead of nipping out to the shops to buy some, I can make my own. Thank you so much for sharing this tip.
I discovered your blog at Flour Me With Love and I have enjoyed my visit Mindie, so I have become a new follower.
    Best wishes from England.

  3. This is bigger than the Mayan calendar ... just kidding. Honestly I had no idea you simply mix sugar and molasses to get brown sugar. That is so cool ... but you do know I am now going to have to try it :)

  12. I never knew you could make brown sugar! I've never had molasses so I couldn't make it myself. Does the homemade version dry out into clumps like the premade one?
