This blog is called the “(mis)Adventures” for a reason….. This is one of those reasons!! I had seen in my Facebook news feed a Pinterest type photo, a few times, shared by friends, and I thought, “well that looks easy enough!!” Oh how random photos on the internet can get you to do things…..
I should have know this was going to be a bad experience when I started, because as soon as I went to the cupboard to get the oil out… well there wasn’t any. So at 9 pm I ventured out into the snowy dark to get some. I was greeted by the doors on my vehicle being frozen shut, but did I give up? No way man, I was on a mission!! Then I couldn’t find my ice scrapper, so I sat in my truck while the windshield melted. And still I did not give up. I was going to be the best wife/mother EVER!!! Because I had seen a photo with no explanations and figured “well that looks easy enough!”
So once I returned home, I mixed up my store bought cake mix in a box. I had chosen a red velvet, because, oh la la, it was Valentine’s baby. Can I just ask, what in god’s name does Duncan Hines put in their red velvet cake mix that stained my fingers (and anything else it touched) red!?!?!? But I digress, we are talking about a Pinterest type fail here. So I go to grab my round and square cake pans and I can’t find my square. At this point I should have realized the universe REALLY didn’t want me to make this cake, but did I listen? NO!!!
After a complete search of the kitchen, the square pan was located and I was back on track. I filled the two pans with the creepy red batter and used toothpicks to make sure the depth on both were equal so the parts would all match up. I set my timer and I waited, with excitement. My cakes came out of the oven and after cooling them I set to work to make the heart cake that would launch me into stardom with my family. But wait….. the circle piece was WAY to big for my square piece if I followed the photo directions!?!?! Poop in a bucket, oh well, I can improvise, right? Ha ha ha……
At one point I actually thought about giving up, I really did. But I was making this (now these) cakes for my family…. I had to see this through. The red velvet cake was all but impossible to frost as little chunks kept contaminating the white of my frosting. I decided to counter this issue with probably too many heart shaped sprinkles. The end result was a cake that looked nothing like a heart and totally like a train wreak. I had failed. And to top it off, the smaller cake I made for the country kids turned out just as bad!
So why am I sharing this disaster with you? Why did I just not hide the results from the world? Because there are lessons here people, very important lessons. Oh but where to start…. In no particular order….. 1.) Store bought cake mixes can be down right scary. 2.) Listen to the universe when it tries to tell you something. 3.) Never let a photo talk you in to believing. 4.) NEVER share a stupid photo with your friends if you personally have not tried it. I mean, come on, they are your friends, you don’t want them to end up with train wreak cake do you? 5.) None of this matters because I made the cakes with love in my heart and no matter how bad they look, my family will still eat them. And while I may not have launched into stardom with this endeavor….. Well at least it brought a little humor to the world.
It was supposed to say LOVE. Yeah I know it's bad, stop laughing...
