Making "Things" With Wine Glasses (aka how to paint on glass!)
There are many cute ideas that float around the internet……. But many times it is just an image and everyone is like “awwwwww,” but when you try to do it yourself….. Well there are no directions!!!! One example of this is wine glass candle sticks. They look amazing but there are secrets….. Very, VERY important secrets that no one tells you about how to make these cute things!! You just think, “oh I’ll get some paint and a wine glass and voila.” Nope. Complete and total fail. It took a few attempts and a little research to figure out how painting on wine glasses occurs. But fret not my friends, I will tell you exactly how it’s done!!!
The key to painting on smooth glass is, well, making it unsmooth. Weird, I know, but that is the secret. And the easiest way to go about doing that is glue! No, really! After a few failed attempts with various types of paint and brushes, I got to looking for an answer as to why none of the paint worked and stuck to the glass. It wasn’t that I was using a one dollar glass from Dollar Tree, it was the smoothness of the glass. So I took some good old Elmer’s glue and watered it down to make my own version of Mod Podge. I painted the glasses with it and waited for them to dry.
When I went to paint them white to look like snowmen…. The white FINALLY stuck!! I used acrylic paint by the way. Once I figured out that simple little trick, it was game on. What I came up with was this cute little snowman candle stick. I think he is adorable and would be great as a handmade gift for someone. But then I got to thinking….. Why stop there? I mean what more could I make with painted wine glasses?
So I got a larger glass and painted it. Why larger? Well I needed the rim of the glass to be stable for something bigger…. Like a plate!!! I super glued a plate to the foot of the glass and now I had a cute handmade serving stand. I think he totally came out cute with his eyes up turned toward the food, in our case, Christmas cookies.
Another secret about doing this kind of painting is to seal it with a spray. And don’t put it in your dishwasher, ever! These are decorative items and should be treated as such. The spray seal will keep them from being dinged easily, but water will destroy them faster then well, just don’t wash them! LOL So now that you know the secret to painting on glass, why not tackle a few candle sticks and serving stands yourself. You don’t have to make snowman…. Be creative. Just think how impressed your holiday guests will be….. Or gift recipients if your so inclined to give a few away!
